Graduated with First Class in History Honours from Presidency College (University of Calcutta) in 1983 and passed M.A. in History from Jadavpur University in 1985 standing First in First Class obtaining Gold Medals. Worked as a Research Fellow in the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Kolkata, during 1986-88. Joined
WBES in February, 1988 and served Krishnagar Government College, Barasat Government College, Presidency College and Presidency University. Acted as the last Head of the Department of History, Presidency College and First Head, Department of History, Presidency University. Also worked as a Guest Faculty in the Post Graduate classes at Jadavpur and Calcutta Universities. Carrying research on different aspects of Modern India, specially on the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda Movement, Munda Revolt, Folk Culture of Bangal etc. Has to her credit a book and a large number of research papers in esteemed journals and edited volumes. Presented papers at numerous national and international seminars.
(1) Projects Completed/Continuing : UGC Minor Research project on Benoy Kumar Sarkar and Folk Culture in the Gangetic West Bengal
(2) Research Guidance : One research scholar submitted Ph.D. thesis to University of Calcutta on an aspect of the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda Movement in June, 2014. Acted as an external examiner of numerous M.Phil. and Ph.D. theses of various universities like Calcutta, Jadavpur, Hyderabad etc.
